Herbicide (Weedicide) Registration in India
Herbicides are registered with the CIB&RC under the Insecticides Act, 1968, like any other pesticide — but a herbicide file lives or dies on crop safety and selectivity. We register selective and non-selective herbicides across the 9(3B), 9(3) and 9(4) routes.
- Selective and non-selective herbicide registration
- Sections 9(3B), 9(3) and 9(4), technical and formulation
- Crop-safety, selectivity and bio-efficacy trial design
- Residue data tied to the crops and use pattern claimed
Herbicides (weedicides) are registered with the CIB&RC under the Insecticides Act, 1968, through the same Section 9 routes as other pesticides. What sets a herbicide file apart is the emphasis on crop safety and selectivity: the bio-efficacy and phytotoxicity data must show the product controls the target weeds without unacceptable damage to the crop, at the doses and timings claimed on the label.
What decides the file
Weed control, without crop damage
The evidence that carries a herbicide registration is different from an insecticide or fungicide. We design the trials around the crop-safety window the label will claim.
Selective herbicides
Registration of herbicides that target weeds while sparing the crop — selectivity is the whole case.
Non-selective herbicides
Broad-spectrum and total-vegetation-control products, with the appropriate use pattern and safety data.
Route & category
Confirming 9(3B), 9(3) or 9(4), and TI/FI/TIM/FIM, before studies are commissioned.
Bio-efficacy & phytotoxicity
Multi-location trials proving weed control and crop safety at the claimed doses and timings.
Residue data
Residue and use-pattern data tied to the specific crops on the label.
Import or manufacture
Herbicide registration for imported and indigenously manufactured products alike.

Herbicide registration, answered
Are herbicides registered under CIB&RC?
Yes. Herbicides (weedicides) are pesticides under the Insecticides Act, 1968 and are registered with the CIB&RC through the Section 9(3B), 9(3) or 9(4) routes, in the same way as insecticides and fungicides.
What data is most important for a herbicide registration?
Crop safety and selectivity. The bio-efficacy and phytotoxicity trials must show the herbicide controls the target weeds without unacceptable crop damage, at the doses, crops and timings claimed on the label, backed by residue data for those crops.
Can a herbicide use the Section 9(4) me-too route?
Yes, where an identical herbicide from a matching source is already registered in India, a 9(4) me-too registration is usually available and is faster and cheaper than a full 9(3) file.
Do you register both selective and non-selective herbicides?
Yes — both selective (crop-safe) and non-selective (broad-spectrum) herbicides, for imported and indigenously manufactured products.
